On a cold and very wet evening Burnham had to work very hard to overcome a Rovers side that had not won in their previous 7 and had only two league victories to their name this season. Manager Jarvis had to tinker with his defence as Will Dunlop had not recovered from an injury picked up on Saturday and Ben Hudell was absent through a one match suspension. Rovers who really belied their lowly position could have scored in the opening minute when Blues keeper Paul McCarthy spilled a free kick taken by skipper Liam George. The ball was pulled back across the goal by Alex O’Brien and fortunately for Burnham no visiting forward was on hand to convert. Almost immediately at the other end a goalmouth scramble saw Rovers finally manage to hack the ball away. Burnham went ahead on 10 minutes, Terry O’Connor was fouled dpwn the left just inside the Rovers half by Peter Duffy, Paul Coyne sent the free kick high into the penalty area where RYAN BIRD rose highest to head past keeper Ryan Rayner. As the rain continued to teem down Ricky Case and Alex O’Brien both tried their luck from distance but neither troubled keeper McCarthy. Denis Fennemore not having one of his better games did manage a good run down the left but his cross eluded his fellow front men. While Burnham appeared to over elaborate in the very wet conditions and were also guilty of getting caught offside too easily, Rovers seemed to enjoy the conditions better. Duffy made a good run down the right but pulled up injured and was soon replaced. Christopher Hewitt struck a firm shot which McCarthy did well to hold onto. A Dave Tilbury cross from the right found the head of Ryan Bird but his attempt on goal came back off the crossbar. Ashley Daniels tested McCarthy with a long range effort before right on the break O’Brien had the ball in the net but was correctly ruled offside.
Rovers came out strongly in the second half and deservedly pulled level on 51 minutes. Terry O’Connor gave the ball away just inside his own half and LIAM GEORGE was left alone and fired a superb shot from some 25 yards that flew past McCarthy. Shortly afterwards it was the visitors turn to strike the crossbar when Sam Spencer was left unmarked at the far post. Another set piece was responsible for Burnham going back in front on the hour. Again Paul Coyne delivered a free kick high into the penalty area where Blues skipper PAUL BRETT headed up and over keeper Rayner. Craig O’Connor had an excellent opportunity to put the game beyond the visitors when he broke clear down the centre with just Rayner to beat. The keeper however stood his ground and blocked the shot. Hewitt tried another long range shot as Rovers continued to push forward looking for the equaliser, but Burnham still looked capable of adding to the score. Jordan Dowdican on for Fennemore slipped the ball to Ross Lafayette but he was quickly closed down and then with the game drawing to a close, Craig O’Connor brought out a first class save from keeper Rayner after the Burnham man had cut in from the right. Not the Blues best display of the season but they did just about enough to stretch their winning run to five.
