BURNHAM 3 BROMSGROVE ROVERS 0
Burnham kept up their good home form (1 league defeat this season) with what proved in the end a comfortable victory. After Rovers striker Josh McKenzie had forced an early save from Burnham keeper Paul McCarthy, the home side opened the scoring after just three minutes. Stuart Swift delivered a high ball into the Rovers penalty area, where Ryan Bird headed on to the unmarked DENIS FENNEMORE who gave keeper Karl Lewis no chance with a shot from 10 yards. Rather than deflate the visitors the reverse seemed to inspire them and they forced Burnham onto the back foot and the home side conceded a number of freekicks, as they had to defend. Cameron Jones did well down the Rover’s right and his cross was headed over by the gangling McKenzie, who soon found himself in the referee’s note book for a couple of infringements. The early encounters became frenetic and tackles were flying in and sensibly referee Ron James called the two skippers together in an effort to calm things down. Fortunately this worked and the game quietened down, which probably suited the home team the best. Burnham went two ahead on 32 minutes, a Paul Coyne corner on the left was headed back across goal to Fennemore who pushed the ball back to where ROSS LAFAYETTE, making his home debut, dived to head his first goal for Burnham. Rovers skipper Danny Schleppel hit a free kick over the bar but Burnham almost added a third just before the break. A fine cross from Burnham defender Dave Tilbury found the head of Will Dunlop whose powerful attempt brought out a great stop from Lewis, at the expense of a corner..
Just three minutes into the second half Burnham did go three up, an excellent move involving Coyne, who released Bird down the right, he made ground and delivered a pin point cross along the ground to the waiting DENIS FENNEMORE who once again gave Lewis no chance. Rovers playing neat football could not find a way through the Burnham defence, their best effort was a shot from Alex Woodhouse who fired through a crowded penalty area only to find McCarthy in a good position to deny him. Burnham on the whole was happy to give up possession and soak up any pressure, and when they did attack always looked a threat to add to the total. Fennemore broke clear down the left but his final ball was not a good one and another neat build up by Burnham involving Coyne and LaFayette ended with sub Jordan Dowdican crowded out at the near post. Rovers had two late attempts when striker McKenzie advanced on goal but McCarthy spotted the danger and dashed out to clear and right on time Danny Campbell tried his luck from distance, but the ball sailed harmlessly over |
