Saturday November 28th 2009 ZAMARETTO LEAGUE DIVISION ONE MIDLAND
BURNHAM 1 SUTTON COLDFIELD TOWN 5
It proved unlucky thirteen for Burnham who after going undefeated in the league for their opening 12 games came a cropper at the 13th hurdle. They can have few complaints as they were thoroughly outplayed by a good display by a well organised Sutton side. The visitors dominated the opening stages, forcing a number of corners and opened the scoring as early as the 10th minute when they were awarded a penalty. Burnham keeper Paul McCarthy rushed out and upended Jamile Matt to concede the award, picking up a yellow card, which on another day could well have been a red. CRAIG MARSHALL netted comfortably from the spot. The visitors continued to have the upper hand and on 26 minutes doubled their advantage. Matt Jackson held the ball up well on the left and delivered a cross to the far post where the Burnham defence pondered while Craig Owen took advantage to square to the waiting JAMILE MATT who had a simple task to net. Burnham skipper Paul Brett had to put in a important tackle to prevent Marshall adding a third and Owen headed straight into the hands of McCarthy. Burnham finally got their game together and Ollie Godwin shot on the turn only to see Simon Hands in the Town goal get down well to prevent a score. Godwin then presented Ryan Bird with an opening but the Burnham striker failed to hit the target from 8 yards with just keeper Hands to beat.
Burnham made a change at the break with Will Dunlop giving way to Tom Willment The home team started the second half well. A double substitution for Burnham in the 53rd minute saw Craig O’Connor and Jordan Dowdican replace Dean Papali and Terry O’Connor and 4 minutes later it had its rewards when a good forward run from Dowdican saw him put RYAN BIRD in to reduce the arrears. Sutton however regained a two-goal advantage in the 67th minute when a corner on the left was met by the unmarked EDWARD BOOTH who powered a header home from close in.
Ben Hudell became the fourth Burnham player to be cautioned in the 71st minute and immediately got caught in possession on the edge of the penalty area leaving MATT DODD clear to beat McCarthy for the visitors fourth. In the 84th minute Burnham was reduced to 9 men with both Paul Brett and Stuart Swift receiving second yellow cards, Brett for a foul and Swift for dissent. Things got even worse for Burnham in the last minute, firstly Dave Tilbury saw red for a poor tackle and with just 8 men they saw JAMES QUIGGAN add a fifth goal from the edge of the penalty area.
Sutton retained their supremacy over Burnham having not lost now in five meetings between the clubs. |
