FA TROPHY SECOND QUAL. ROUND REPLAY
Tuesday 3 November 2009
BURNHAM 2 CROYDON ATHLETIC 1
Another tight encounter saw Burnham come from behind to win a place in the final qualifying round away to Worcester City.
The first half was much alike to the first match with both sides pushing forward but failing to finish. The first real chance of the match came on 12 minutes when a Terry O’Connor cross went to Dean Papali who shot wide. On 14 minutes a good interception from Ben Hudell who sent long ball forward to Ryan Bird who cut in and shot straight at goalkeeper Ross Flitney. On 20 minutes another chance came when Paul McCarthy sent a long kick into the opposition penalty area, it found Papali who cut round the advancing Flitney and his shot was deflected out for a corner by defender Chris Piper. A Croydon corner was sent out to Dan Waldren whose shot went over the crossbar. Both sides continued to press with a Stuart Swift shot going into the side netting and a good Croydon attack eventually breaking down and going for a goal kick.
Croydon started the better after the break and were rewarded on 52 minutes when a cross from the right was headed onto Ben GODFREY at the far post who scored from close in. Soon after Ben Hudell was cautioned for a foul on Scott Forrester and then the same player took a freekick that saw Flitney tip away for a corner. In the 56th minute O’Connor was upended in the box and the referee did not hesitate in pointing to the spot for a penalty. Swift stepped up and Flitney guessed right and pushed the ball away for a corner. The Blues did get level on 59 minutes when an Adrian Sear through ball found Ryan BIRD who pushed through three defenders before scoring. Burnham were now in charge with Swift seeing his effort tipped over by Flitney for another corner. On 70 minutes Bird picked up another Sear through ball and with the goal at his mercy somehow shot wide. On 80 minutes Burnham went in front when BIRD got past Flitney and his shot dropped just under the crossbar much to everyone’s joy. Croydon came back into the game for the last five minutes of ordinary time and the five or so added minutes but the Blues held firm.
