SLOUGH TOWN 0 BURNHAM 2
Burnham kept faith with the same starting line up that had performed so well on Saturday against Arlesey, but it was the home team that settled the quickest and could have gone ahead in the first minute. Chris Herron got clear but Blues keeper Paul McCarthy was alert to the danger and saved with his feet. The Rebels enjoyed the greater share of possession during the first half with the lively Steve Sinclair and Chris Herron combining well down the right. Keeper McCarthy had received a knock and his mobility was restricted but he reacted well to keep out a Paul Edgeworth header following a Sinclair cross. Herron had a couple of attempts on goal, being just over with a powerful drive and then breaking clear only to see McCarthy advance and smother the ball. Little had been seen of the Burnham attack at this stage but they did have a golden opportunity to take the lead when Terry O’Connor got forward down the right His cross reached Stuart Swift who should have netted but his shot was cleared off the line. Herron had another effort cut out by McCarthy and Tommy Hayes fired over. The Rebels thought they had taken the lead a couple of minutes before the break when Simon Martin headed in, but the assistant linesman flagged for an infringement. At the other end Rebels keeper Ricky Perks had to be at his best to keep out a Ben Hudell freekick. The keeper parried the ball that fell to Paul Coyne who put his effort behind.
Burnham took the lead in the first minute of the second half, Dean Papali was brought down by Nathan Bowden-Haase just outside the penalty area. ROB SAUNDERS took the kick which took a slight deflection to give keeper Perks no chance. Burnham now was on top and Terry O’Connor had a shot cut out by Perks while Adrian Sear fired over. The advantage was doubled on 53 minutes when Graeme Edwards under pressure from RYAN BIRD, failed to deal with the ball and the Burnham striker took the chance to fire into the net off the inside of the upright. The second goal appeared to deflate the Rebels and Burnham really should have increased their lead. Slough did force a few corners late in the game, however the well-organised Burnham defence was not put under any undue pressure, and held out comfortably..
