Monday September 21st 2009 FA YOUTH CUP PRELIMINARY ROUND
BURNHAM UNDER 18S 0 MAIDENHEAD UNITED UNDER 18S 2
Burnham put up a creditable performance but found United just too strong for them. The Blues with 7 16 year olds in the starting line up (with a a further three on the bench), were penned back in their own half in the opening minutes. The Magpies Khomsi and Lock both looked sharp down the visitors right, but their attacks were spoilt by getting caught offside. For Burnham Jordan Richardson and Adam Amarasinghe showed some neat touches up front but lacked the physical stature to unsettle the taller United defenders.
The visitors pressure paid off on 35 minutes, Lee Bennett in the Burnham goal who had an outstanding game, brought off an excellent stop to deny Lock, but from the resultant corner United skipper Jake Chance rose unmarked to head powerfully into the net. Burnham had to reshuffle after the break, bringing on Simeon Gumbs for skipper Jordan Quinn who had received a head injury late in the first half. The Magpies went two up after 49 minutes with a somewhat harsh penalty award against the Blues. Harvey Muddyman was adjudged to have committed a foul in the penalty area and up stepped George Lock to blast the ball past Bennett. Maidenhead still looked the more likely to score but Lee Bennett was in superb form and denied them a further score. Burnham had their best attacking period in the final 10 minutes and sub Jack Aitkenhead brought out an excellent stop from the Magpies keeper Clarke and Gumbs having a good debut fired just over. So United progress while Burnham can reflect on a good performance and credit must go to both sides for providing a good game of football played in an excellent spirit.
